HPL HallA three part filmmaking workshop series featuring Pedro Bermudez.
Workshop 1 — See It Differently: The Language of the Frame
Every shot tells a story before a single word is spoken. In this first workshop, students are introduced to the grammar of visual storytelling — exploring the seven core visual elements of filmmaking: color, space, line, shape, movement, rhythm, and tone. Through film clips, hands-on exercises, and discussion, participants begin to recognize how directors use the frame as a compositional tool and how point of view shapes the emotional experience of the viewer. By the end, students will shoot their own short sequence using intentional camera choices, bringing theory into immediate practice.
Workshop 2 — Cut to the Truth: Editing and the Montage
Film lives in the edit. In this second workshop, students get hands-on with Adobe Premiere Pro — learning the interface, timeline workflow, and essential cutting techniques while diving into one of cinema’s most powerful ideas: the montage. From Eisenstein to music videos to modern trailers, we study how the collision of images creates meaning greater than any single shot. Students will edit a short montage sequence from provided footage, developing both technical fluency and editorial instinct in a single session.
Workshop 3 — The Future of the Frame: AI Filmmaking + 3D Animation
As a culminating bonus session, students take a forward-looking look at the tools reshaping visual storytelling. We survey the emerging landscape of AI filmmaking — exploring text-to-video tools, generative imagery, and how working directors are beginning to integrate these technologies into their workflows. Students also get an introductory look at Blender, the industry-standard open-source 3D animation platform, experimenting with basic scene-building and animation. Equal parts inspiration and experimentation, this workshop asks the central question: what does it mean to be a filmmaker when the tools are changing this fast?

Hartford Public Library’s history spans more than 235 years. We can trace its very beginnings to the Library Company, formally organized in 1774 by a few subscribers to purchase a "collection of useful and religious books". And now, the library is a national leader in redefining the urban public library in the 21st century as an innovative and stimulating place where people can learn and discover, explore their passions, and find a rich array of resources that contribute to a full life.
