March 22, 2026 Rodney Jones
Rodney Jones, a luminary of the jazz guitar scene, stands as a revolutionary force redefining tradition with fearless innovation. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, his musical journey began at age 8, inspired by a household blending blues echoes with academic pursuits. Jones's distinctive style emerged from a diverse tapestry of influences, from Jimi Hendrix's soulful strains to the pioneering sounds of John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner. Venturing into New York City's vibrant jazz scene as a teenager, Jones immersed himself in soul bands, honing his craft while drawn to the revolutionary sounds of Coltrane and Tyner. Joining Dizzy Gillespie's quartet marked a transformative phase, propelling him to global recognition and sparking a solo career that showcased his virtuosity and vision. Jones's contributions extend beyond performance; he's been a dedicated educator at institutions like The Juilliard School, shaping the next generation of jazz talent through workshops and his Jazz Guitar Scholars program. His legacy resonates as a beacon of innovation, passion, and unwavering dedication to jazz's timeless art, leaving an indelible mark on the musical landscape. Jones was named a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow for Jazz Composition.

Hartford Public Library’s history spans more than 235 years. We can trace its very beginnings to the Library Company, formally organized in 1774 by a few subscribers to purchase a "collection of useful and religious books". And now, the library is a national leader in redefining the urban public library in the 21st century as an innovative and stimulating place where people can learn and discover, explore their passions, and find a rich array of resources that contribute to a full life.
