Petulia Blake, Ph.D., is a former business professor who
has taught in New York, Connecticut, and South China.
Throughout the years, she has given talks at conferences in
Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean. She is now the
founder of myhappyescape.com, a retreat program that
caters to small adult groups for global explorations. As a
consultant, Dr. Blake also conducts life and career
coaching to young adult learners and professionals. This
dynamic woman considers the Albany Branch Library in
Hartford, CT, to have been her safe space. It was there that
she was able to study in tranquility and began researching
colleges as a new immigrant to the US in the early 90s.
After spending a great deal of time in the library, Mr.
Anwar A. Ahmad hired her to work there as a Library
Page—a part-time position. In her book “My Happy Escape: Adventurers of a Global
Sojourner,” she chronicles her journey around the world as a solo traveler. Although she brings
her readers to many places and spaces around the globe, her story delves into issues of trauma
and anxiety. As she navigates the world with ease, she encounters people from all walks of life in
search of a safe space. She encourages her audience to not only find a safe space to cope with
chaos, but to become a safe space for others. Dr. Blake has been a champion for young people to
pursue their dreams. She guides individuals to be inspired, create affirmations, and take action
even in the midst of turmoil

The Albany Branch Library endeavors daily to maintain its role as one of Albany Avenue’s most vital resources. The Albany Branch was established in 1926. It was first located in the Northwest School and then in rented quarters at 1239 Albany Avenue. The branch’s present location at 1250 Albany Avenue opened in February 1950 in a building designed by H. Sage Goodwin. In 2011 a new 8,000 square foot facility on the corner of Albany and Blue Hills Avenues replaced the sixty-one-year-old structure.
